Cultural Gentrification

The process by which a cultural form or practice changes its character when consumed at scale by a different community — the aesthetic surface is retained and the contextual depth is simplified or lost. The community that produced the form often sees someone else profit from the simplified version while the depth remains unavailable to most consumers.
