On'yomi / Kun'yomi

Literal Translation
The two types of kanji readings in Japanese. On'yomi is the Chinese-derived sound reading — imported from Chinese pronunciation at various historical periods. Kun'yomi is the native Japanese word reading — attached to the character's meaning rather than its Chinese sound. Many kanji have multiple of each.
