Co-founder of Studio Ghibli alongside Hayao Miyazaki. Where Miyazaki's films tend toward wonder and animism, Takahata's tend toward grief and the specific cost of ordinary life. Grave of the Fireflies, Only Yesterday, and The Tale of Princess Kaguya are his major works. Less famous in the West than Miyazaki. Arguably more important.
