(江湖) Literally "rivers and lakes." The social world inhabited by wuxia heroes — martial artists, outlaws, wanderers — who exist outside the official social order. Not a specific place but a social space with its own codes and hierarchies. Entry is irreversible. The loneliness and freedom of the jianghu is one of the genre's consistent emotional notes.
