Mianzi

(面子) Face — reputation, social standing, and worth that exist in relation to others. A Confucian social concept. Losing mianzi is a social cost. Giving someone mianzi — acknowledging their standing publicly — is a social gift. One of the most important concepts for understanding Chinese social dynamics.
