Awkwafina's performance aside — which is excellent — the film is worth naming specifically because it features a Chinese family depicted with the full interior complexity of actual human beings, without any of the cultural exoticisation that Western films about Asian families consistently produce. Made by an Asian-American director. Matters for that reason.
